Good Grief in GP Practices

Bereavement support, offered where families already turn

Noah’s Story Charity will establish its first Good Grief Partner Practice. The partnership is the Year One focus of our 2027–2031 strategic plan, and it will run as a pilot.

GPs are often among the first professionals a family encounters after someone dies. Most bereaved people will never need specialist bereavement services - but many benefit a great deal from accessible, evidence-informed resources that normalise grief and support healthy adjustment following loss.

Who is involved

A collaborative approach

The pilot builds on collaboration between Noah’s Story Charity, Trustee Director Linda Doherty Riley, consultation with MDT social workers and our first Partner Practice.

It is a practical example of how Noah’s Story is working collaboratively to improve outcomes for individuals, families and communities and of a GP practice choosing to offer something at the point where people first ask for help.

What the pilot is for

A first step, designed to be learned from

What we learn from the pilot will shape everything that follows.

  • Test the model

Put the Good Grief Kit into a real practice setting and see how it works in day-to-day primary care.

  • Listen to families

Gather feedback from the people who actually receive a kit, in their own words.

  • Assess the impact

Understand what difference the support makes, honestly and without overclaiming.

  • Build something scalable

Develop a programme other practices could adopt, based on evidence rather than assumption.

Status: Planned

Where this goes next

Between 2028 and 2030 we aim to expand into additional GP practices, engage GP Federations, explore social prescribing opportunities and develop awareness resources for healthcare professionals.

Those are ambitions rather than commitments. The Year One pilot is what will tell us how to pursue them well.

You can read about this work on our Good Grief in GP Practices page, or learn more about the Good Grief programme and the four kits.

If you work in a practice that would like to be considered as a future Good Grief Partner Practice, we would be glad to hear from you.
